Potential Hands/Grippers servo problem?

I'm thinking of making some grippers or hands for my Robonova, but have a question hopefully someone can answer.
What stops a servo from closing too far onto an object and crushing/damaging it?
Is it easy to write a routine that will tell the processor to stop moving the servo when an obstuction is felt?
Presumably if some sort of code is not included, the servos will soon burn out.
I have to say I am a complete novice, so if anyone has written something like this, and would be willing to share, I'd be very grateful.

Roboard and Capacitor

I am working on a new torso design for my bioloid and since I have to fit quite a number of items in a small space, I was thinking of adding a capacitor between the battery and roboard so that it might serve as a protection in case of loose contact, of coarse to avoid burning my dear roboard. Now I am a complete newbie as regards electronics, anyone can suggest whether this is a good idea, and if so what is the size (uF) for the capacitor? also can a fuse be used as a protection against reverse polarity?

Thanks

How to start programming the CM-5/CM-510 with C

From time to time I receive questions about how to start programming the CM-5/CM-510 with C.

I think it's necessay to have a working knowledge about:

1. C programming
2. CM-5/CM-510 programming
3. Dynamixel protocol

1. C programming
I think "C Programming for Microcontrollers is a fast and very practical introduction to C and microcontrolers programming, but I'm a not sure if it an easy way to start learning C.

If you a want a more structured and deeper introduction to the C programming language, C introduction (pdf) is a pretty good and free introduction.

But there are a lot:

C Language Tutorial (html)
Several C programming tutorials (html)

2. CM-5/CM-510 programming
From Robotis support website CM-5/CM-510 programming

3. Dynamixel protocol

From Robotis support website Dynamixel actuator

ax-12 no ID!

I was working with my bioloid, and a wire got loose, everything was reset and to my surprise, all the ax-12s from that point onwards ended up with no ID, they switch up normally but they are not recognized by either dynamixel manager nor the CM-5. I tried to reload the *.rom file for ax-12 again through the cm-5. Even though I got "ax-12 updated" message still no improvement. Any idea what can I do, hope they are not all lost as they mount up to 4 servos!!!

Robotis EX 106+ Problems

Hi all. I just bought 3 robotis ex 106 + for a Delta Robot. First, one servo suddenly locked. i oppened it and found out that two gears were contacting and locked the geartrain. I managed to unlock them but it was useless because the motor got stucked.

I changed the servo for an ex 106 (not plus) and kept working but suddenly after 30 minutes another ex 106+ failed by getting an offset angle of like 5 degrees. Even with the dynamixel manager.

i unplugged and plugged the servo wire and the problem solved: the servo went back to the correct position. Now we will prevent this problem by restarting the servos periodically. =S

Has anyone noticed about this last problem?

Beginner needs help (Bioloid Premium Kit)

Hy together

About 5 moth ago I bought the Bioloid Premium Kit. Up to this time, I hadn't any experience in robotics. I thought I could learn how to program a robot by doing and a lot of research in the Internet. But this was a fail.

What I reached up to now:
I can turn the LED on and off and let a servo do a move.

My problem now is to do the next step. How should I structure the whole program? And how could a walk be implemented? Now I wanna ask you, could anybody give me a whole working program for the Premium Kit, that I have an example about how it should be done?

thanks a lot
Complete NewBee - Roboard 110 How do I make it work?

Greetings all,

Well the subject line says it all. I have a just recently purchased a RB-110 along with the Mini VGA card. I have been trying desperately to get some form of Display output from it but so far I have been unsuccessful. I really need some help in getting at the BIOS so that I can get started with this board. Here is some information that may help.....

Power Supply - 12V 2Amps

Have tried the VGA Card by going through a KVM switch.
I use a PS2 to USB Keyboard and Mouse 'Y' Cable
I have tried the Serial (COM1 ans 2) port method of communication

The board powers up and the RED LED come on... a few seconds later the GREEN LED comes on...

Also.. How does everybody else gain access to the BIOS? What am I missing here..

Thanks in advance,
Does anybody have an example of C++ code that will get a PWM working?

I'm running Linux, and the only API I've seen for the Roboard amounts to comments in the various library files. It's not clear to me which functions I need to call, and with what range of inputs, in order to get a PWM up and running.

DCMP and Charging battery

I think DCMP.HEX have one problem with battery charging

No green Led LED Blinking when I puch FP2 button at Power ON and visibly no charging.

I tested with BASIC.HEX and no problem

I compared BASIC and DCMP source code and I can't see one real difference, but I'm one newbies in C ATMEGA

Can you fix it for me please and for my culture, explain me where is the difference

I posted a picture of the first prototype of a USB2Kondo ICS adapter I made. It's similar to the Kondo ICS adapter in functionality, except that it provides 8 channels and external power connector.

This is just a utility device for testing and prototyping purposes, eventually I seek to build a programmable RCB-4/KCB-1 clone (with more power and features).

using SRF05 with RoBoard

Hi,

I know, I should have bought the I2C version of the Ultra-Sonic sensors (SRF08 or SRF10) but I have not. The operation of the SRF05 (or SRF04) still is quite simple but I wonder which are the best library elements of the RB100 SW to use.

I connect the Trigger Input / Echo Output of SRF05 (Mode 2 - single pin) to one of the PWM ports (her channel 10) and intend to use the rcservo.h library. A sequence similar to this should do:

rcservo_Initialize(RCSERVO_USECHANNEL10);
rcservo_EnterPWMMode();
rcservo_SendPWMPulses(10, 15L, 14L, 1): // send 1 pulse of 15us to SRF05
while (!rcservo_IsPWMCompleted(10)); // wait until finished
while (in_value = rcservo_Inp(10) = 0); // check for rising edge of return signal
t1 = localtime(&tv.tv_sec); // will build a function to get system time in micro-seconds
while (in_value = rcservo_Inp(10) = 1); // check for falling edge of return signal
t2 = localtime(&tv.tv_sec); // will build a function to get system time in micro-seconds

pulse_length = t2 - t1; // return signal length in micro-seconds

Would you please comment if that would work with enough accuracy to determine the object's distance? To improve statistics I could put the measurement into a loop to repeat say 10 times.

I wonder if any of the servo commands in "Capture Mode" could be used to determine the return signal's pulse length?

Best regards,
KHR-1HV Set-up frustration

Hi again,

Juts had a particularly frustrating afternoon trying to get my KHR-1HV set-up again.

The original battery pack no longer holds a charge, so i'm using a desktop power supply from maplin.

First problem was H2H, it refused to recognise the RCB-3J when connected to my Thinkpad running XP. The ONLY way i could get it working was to run XP through parallels on my MacPro.

So H2H was now seeing my RCB-3J and i can get live servo feedback.

Next thing i tried to do was install the basic motions which came on the supplied CD.

The bottom line was that some work (bow, dance/wave arms), but most end up with the robot falling over or at best toppling around and almost falling over.

The 'get up from on his back' motion ends in a crouch from which he launches backwards and the forward steps look like he's having a fit - nothing like the various movies i've seen of the KHR-1HV.

I then tried to look at resetting the 'set-up' positon (the one with arms out and legs bent and then the basic home(?) position - standing up straight.

I only have a Japanese version of the assembly manual, so to be honest i'm prodding around at buttons and not really understanding what i should be doing.

I anyone would be kind enough to:

1. provide some info/english resources to help me set the robot up with it's two basic positions - simple steps maybe?
2. help/supply me with a basic set of motions which are known to work
3. possibly help with my other thread - getting the gyros working - i'd be a happy chap.

I don't expect riverdance, but i'd like to be able to use the remote to have him walk around and throw a few moves without always ending up on his back.

At the moment i'm back at the point i was a couple of years back, where i put him on a shelf in frustration.

KHR-1HV Gyros

Hi All,

Could anyone help with setting up the gyros on my KHR-1HV please?

I have two of them (KRG-3), plus the an RAS-2.

See pic below for actual positions. But for clarity, one is positioned at the base of the main body between the hip servos and the other is on the back plate of the body between the shoulder servos.

The RAS-2 is glues to the inside of the back cover.

The red lines indicate the direction of the longest side of each sensor.

Gyros and RAS-2 are all connected up to the RCB-3 and in the analogue window the gyros appear to be functioning.

I'd simply like to know what settings other people have used to get the best results from the gyros (screen grabs would be good ) - ie which servos move with each gyro and what amount of movement works best.

I find H2H very un-intuitive to work with and am paranoid about burning out a servo, so my KHR-1HV has been sitting around looking good, but doing nothing which seems like a waste of money.

So it would be good to at least get him set-up correctly and have a few motions programmed so i can at least show what he can do when people ask about him.

Any help would be much appreciated.

KHR-1 + Roboard

Here's how to install the Roboard onto the KHR1. (this combo is sold exclusively here on RoboSavvy while stock lasts)

Here you can see that KHR1 is clearly a fun loving humanoid..

Little does he know that his brain (which is on his back), is about to be replaced.

Off goes the power switch and KHR1 goes onto the operation table.

One by one, his limbs's synapses (servo connectors) are detached from the Medulla Oblongata (RCB-1 servo controller connectors)

New brain (Roboard) freshly installed with Linux (or was it XP?). Imagine waking up with 100 times the brain power you had when you went to sleep.

No need for VGA now after the O/S is installed.

Standard KHR1 battery goes here.
There he is up and running again but this time with a new brain and personality.
